About This Release
In the 1990s we had an expression, MIDI Hell, that described making music in a new way. MIDI was invented in the 1980s and quickly became quite functional in bedroom music studios. Rather than recording audio, we captured bits of digital information akin to holes punched into paper rolls in a player piano. These “holes” were instructions to play notes on our musical instruments – when, where and however we wanted them. Also during the 1990s, audio recording also evolved, from analog tape to digital bits of information, aka ones and zeroes.
This album is a collection of music I created largely from the late 1980s into the 1990s using this new technology. Early songs like The Skids are experimental and sometimes silly. Later songs like Deems Worthy are more polished, in acid / electronic jazz styles.
